Well, we finally bought a new camera today to replace our broken Canon SD300. We went to B&H Photo on 34th Street in Manhattan – not gonna go back there on a Sunday, it was a madhouse! Anyway, we had decided to buy another ultra-compact camera now, for snapshots and video, and supplement it with a DSLR in a few months or so.
We looked at a bunch of cameras:
- Canon SD450
- Canon SD600
- Panasonic FX01
- Casio EX-Z60
We also had the Pentax Optio S6 on our list, but they didn’t have a demo model.
First the SD600 trumped its predecessor, the SD450, by being a bit faster and having two million more pixels. Then the Panasonic and the Casio went down as well; they just didn’t handle as well as the Canons.
We’re happy with the SD600 as our ultra-compact camera; once we also have a DSLR we’ll be pretty well outfitted. We already had two batteries, a charger, and a case from our SD300, so we now have three batteries, two chargers, and a case for our SD600; pretty nice.
We also picked up a Sandisk 1GB Extreme II SD Plus – this is an SD card that can fold in half to expose a USB connector, and be plugged right into any USB port. No more cables or adapters needed! This is an ingenious innovation and well worth the premium; kudos to Sandisk.
After B&H we picked up Rafi and Diana in SOHO, in our Prius, then had dinner with Grandma & Grandpa Katz in Forest Hills — way, way too much excellent food, as usual, and good company too. Then we dropped R&D off at their place in Boro Park, and picked up Sharon, Reuben’s fiancé, and a friend at a hotel around the corner. They came home with us to hang out and see our apartment. ….And they just left now. Whew!
In other news, Avi has had a software release named after him.
Goodnight!
